Shopping Off The Beaten Path

San Antonio shopping experiences and opportunities take place on "less traveled" roads or areas of the city that may be viewed as off the beaten path. Shopping in San Antonio primarily takes place at shopping centers or malls but San Antonio has several places that offer a unique shopping experience for specialty items, antiques, or other trinkets that are hard to find or shoppers wouldn't otherwise know about. Some of these less known shopping outlets are out of the San Antonio city limits but within short driving distance. Others are close to the heart of the city but don't have the exposure of larger retail shopping outlets and stores.

For instance, the are some hard to see (or find) shops on Broadway in Alamo Heights selling unique items such as handmade jewelry and boutique items. There are some stores out by Stone Oak and Sonterra that have uncommon and hard to find items for sale. Even day trips to surrounding towns will carry shoppers to out of the ordinary little stores and shops. Hard to find and unique items are rarely found at shopping malls or shopping centers but these out of the way establishments will sometimes have just the type of clothes, jewelry or other items you're looking for with the uncommon shopping experience to go along with it.

Finding Off The Beaten Path Shopping Opportunities

Other than what's listed on this site, we can offer tips and advice on finding those uncommon shopping experiences. Keep in mind that San Antonio is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States and shopping in San Antonio on the less traveled path is widely available. Finding that sort of information can be challenging if you don't know any better. Here's what we suggest:

  • Ask those around you that live and work here. If you happen to be dining at a restaurant, ask the waiter or hostess. Be specific about what you're looking for and they can generally point you in the right direction. If you're staying in a hotel ask the front desk or better yet, ask somebody from the housekeeping staff. The majority of these will be hispanics that will direct you to the places that they enjoy shopping. It may be a good distance but the wonderful Hispanic population in San Antonio know the absolute best out of the way and hard to find shopping venues.
  • If you go into any boutique or antique center, the salespeople will know other rare shopping finds they'll happily share with you. Don't think that they shop solely in the store that employs them.
  • The San Antonio Express- News will have feature articles and special sections dedicated to shopping opportunities such as trunk shows, jewelry and clothes buying exhibits. Check the paper on different days for off the beaten path shopping opportunities.
