- Be nice to the movers - They'll be a lot more careful moving your things if they feel the client is good-hearted and respectful. They'll be less careful if they're treated in a disrespectful manner.
- Buy the movers lunch - The moving company employees love to keep their money and buying them lunch will speed up the process because they won't leave the job to eat something.
- Keep drinks in a cooler - This is a nice gesture and will keep them from coming into your kitchen and asking for something to drink. Movers do get thirsty.
- Check on the guy loading the trailer - The leader of a moving crew is usually the guy that loads the trailer and stacks your belongings. He'll be extra careful if you're routinely out by the moving van or trailer checking if he needs anything to drink, cool towel, etc.
- Inventory everything - The moving company will inventory boxes and furniture but make sure that anything that goes out the door has an inventory sticker on it.
- Use common sense - Relocation of your valuables should be your responsibility. Don't depend on the moving company employees to pack and move your jewelry, silver, or family heirlooms.
Just keep in mind that relocation and moving companies generally do a good job. They move people and their belongings every day. Treat movers with respect and and they'll ensure that your belongings are cared for. Movers aren't vindictive but it's just a policy that is good to have.
