San Antonio Mexican Restaurants - continued

Browns Mexican Restaurant

Brown's Mexican Food is an established Mexican restaurant southeast of downtown San Antonio. Known as a popular lunch spot businessmen and women from the downtown area, Brown's is a favorite for enchiladas. The front of their menu claims "We specialize in enchiladas". Their claim is quite true regarding enchiladas. The enchiladas themselves are great but the gravy covering the beef or cheese enchiladas is really tasty. I'm not sure exactly what it is but it seems to be a chili powder flavoring that makes this popular Mexican dish so much better than the average enchilada plate. Of course, I recommend any of Brown's Mexican food but I wholeheartedly recommend any of the enchilada plates. Brown's Mexican Food Menu - Brown's Menu Page 2

Pico De Gallo

This restaurant has been packed every time we've been here. The line may seem long but generally moves fast. Pico de Gallo is a very large restaurant with a sprawling dining area on two floors. The food at Pico de Gallo Mexican Restaurant is very authentic as is the atmosphere. When I tell people where to find great Mexican food, I tell them about Pico de Gallo. Actually, out of town visitors will have a better idea of true Mexican food taste at Pico de Gallo than anywhere I recommend. It's the real deal...recipes from old Mexico in San Antonio. Top notch - period.

Beto's

This is not an ordinary Tex-Mex restaurant. In fact it's not really a Tex-Mex restaurant at all. Beto's is more of a unique blend of empenadas, tacos and quesadillas with an emphasis on seafood and coastal dining fare. Although you can find enchiladas at Beto's you'll be pleased to try the fish tacos or empenadas at this awesome Mexican restaurant. Fish tacos are an excellent choice when dining at Beto's Comida Latina as are the Pork Al Pastor Tacos, as written up in Texas Monthly top 63 tacos to eat before you die. Also served at Beto's is the fashionable Cuban cocktail, the Mojito. Beto's is an excellent choice for uncommon San Antonio mexican food.

Ana's Mexican Food

Undoubtedly the best puffy tacos in San Antonio. They're not "overly puffy" like you'll find in other Mexican restaurants. They're good and greasy with just a bit of "puff", if you get my drift. Ana's other Mexican plates are pretty good as well and they have good lunch specials at reasonable prices. Just a little bit out of the way but worth the trip, Ana's Mexican Restaurant is on the south side of San Antonio just across from Calaveras Lake.

Thousand Oaks Cafe

Flat out awesome! We love going to the Thousand Oaks Cafe for breakfast. The breakfast taco menu itself is long enough to rival another Mexican restaurant's entire menu. You can get pretty much anything you want at the Thousand Oaks Cafe. We love the chilequiles and chorizo (made with Kiolbassa Chorizo) and egg tacos. They don't use processed cheese like you'll find at other places. They use real cheese, homemade tortillas and a hot sauce that's out of this world. It doesn't look like a Mexican restaurant from the outside, or inside for that matter. But rest assured, this Mexican food is out of this world. We highly recommend either of the Thousand Oaks Cafe two locations.

Taco Garage

The Taco Garage is a great Mexican restaurant converted to a taco eatery from an old Brake Check location. The food at the Taco Garage is primarily Tex-Mex with tacos being the primary menu item. They serve enchiladas, chalupas, nachos and other similar Tex-Mex items at the Taco Garage in addition to the extensive selection of tacos available on the menu. The prices are very reasonable and the decor consists of classic car and old redone auto pictures. They boast a secret Tecate beer batter for deep fried Taco Garage fajitas and if it's like their other menu items, the fajitas are just as good. Open 7 am to 3 pm daily but live music can be heard after these hours in the evening on weekends. Good food at the Taco Garage...highly recommended Tex-Mex.
