Brackenridge Park

Brackenridge Park is a 343 acre outdoor recreational area two miles north of downtown. The San Antonio River winds through the park and is surrounded by picnic areas, pavilions, and athletic fields. Interestingly, the headwaters of the San Antonio River are in Brackenridge Park making this recreational family gathering place a true San Antonio asset.

About Brackenridge Park

The park is full of numerous recreational activities for children and adults alike. There are miles of jogging and walking trails throughout the park and are covered with a natural canopy of trees. The thick vegetation makes these trails more of tunnels through the park. The birds, squirrels, and animals living among the park trails makes for a beautiful and lively nature walk.

One thing to note is that the park is home to many local families on holidays as they gather here for big family get together's. An abundance of picnic areas and picnic tables in a picturesque setting has been attracting families and friends to this park for over 100 years. These holidays and some weekends produce bumper to bumper traffic with all of the visitors coming to this San Antonio park. All of the buildings and structures in the park are of historical value. Park visitors can tell by the construction materials and design of these buildings that they are almost a hundred years old. The water crossing over (or through) the river has been there for as long as I can remember.

Brackenridge Activities

Aside from the picnics, relaxation, and trails to enjoy, the park has numerous other recreational activities and park attractions. The south end of Brackenridge is a golf driving range with the horse stables just across the street. The river going through the park is home to ducks and wild birds to feed. Fishing in the river isn't that great but one can attempt to try his luck although I wouldn't eat anything caught out of the river here. Train rides on the Brackenridge Eagle, small train that runs through the park is available and is popular among families with small children. The train is runs on propane so the exhaust fumes aren't bothersome. The park is surrounded by and borders several recreational attractions for family outings including:

Brackenridge Park is an excellent recreational venue in San Antonio with options for family enjoyment. Just make sure to avoid those busy weekends!
