American Food in San Antonio

American Style Food

Down home cooking in the San Antonio area is easy to come by. Maybe there's a different name for this style if dining in San Antonio but we call it American because these American style restaurants serve dishes found menus throughout this great country. Food like hot wings, chicken fried steak, and apple pie can be found at these San Antonio restaurants. Some of the places we are chains or franchises but we list them because they're classic American dining found right here in San Antonio and deserve mention.

Mama's Restaurant

Mama's Cafe has five locations in San Antonio. Mama's was founded in San Antonio almost thirty years ago and has been serving the same great food with a southwest flavor ever since. Mama's Cafe has a full bar at each of their locations and their restaurants are decorated with Texas memorabilia. The menu ranges from awesome fried mushrooms as an appetizer to the sancho panza stuffed steak. Mama's has burgers and fries, meatloaf, milkshakes, and of course apple pie for dessert. One of our favorites is the King Ranch chicken which supposedly is the original recipe from the King Ranch. Check out their menu on Mama's Cafe website.

Wing Stop

If you like buffalo wings or "hot wings", visit the Wing Stop. I've been eating wings all over the state and have yet to find a recipe for hot wings that comes close to the recipe originating at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York. Yes I've had the original wings from the Anchor Bar and the Wing Stop has my favorite chicken wing recipe in San Antonio. The Wing Stop also has numerous other flavors for their wings like Teriyaki and Hawaiian barbeque but if you want real, original flavored wings, visit Wing Stop and order the "original hot" wings. Chicken wings, or hot wings are as American as it gets. Wing Stop is as good as wings get in San Antonio.

Buffalo Wild Wings

Not as close the Anchor Bar recipe but their other food sure is good. The sandwiches I've had are good and you get to choose from one of their sauces on several of their sandwiches. The potato wedges from this restaurant are really good. I'd recommend Buffalo Wild wings if you're in the area because their sauce options are sweet to spicy and their menu is quite impressive for a wing restaurant. Give this restaurant a shot.

Guenther House

This historic restaurant sits on the property of the historic Pioneer Flour Mills. The Guenther house is an excellent place for sandwiches, salads, and soups. The lunch crowd primarily consists of downtown businessmen and women with a few folks coming in from farther away because the food is that good. The restaurant sits on the banks of the san Antonio river with beautiful houses on the opposite side of the river. It is available for rental and well worth it. The grounds are manicured precisely and the sunken dining room maintains its historic value. The Guenther house is a downtown San Antonio historic dining treasure.

Jim's Restaurant

Jim's is the local 24 hour diner and coffee shop. This restaurant has all the down home diner foods like chicken fried steak, burgers, chicken tenders, and fish sandwiches. Breakfast options include the all American steak and eggs or pancakes. Any meal at Jim's is served hot and fast. This local restaurant chain has locations in all parts of San Antonio ready to serve its customers. Believe it or not, the tortilla soup at Jim's is some of the best in the city. It's listed on the menu as "Award Winning Tortilla Soup" and rightfully so.

Magic Time Machine

This restaurant could also be listed in as a steak restaurant because they have a good section for steaks on the menu. The food here consists of chicken ribs, beef, salmon, catfish, shrimp, you name it. It's all-American fare with an atmosphere that is perfect for the whole family. The kids will be entertained the whole time watching the wait staff. All of the waiters dress up in costumes such as super heroes or fairytale characters that really delights the little ones. Visit the Magic Time Machine restaurant for a fun family dining experience.

Chili's

Realizing that Chili's is an international chain restaurant, they still call Texas home. Founded in Dallas, Chili's has Texas roots and a strong presence in San Antonio. Besides, look at the name...Chili's is a San Antonio name. Chili's is here because the food is great and the chicken crispers are absolutely fabulous. The wet batter fried tenders keep me a regular at Chili's. They're served with honey mustard dipping sauce that's better than ketchup for the fries. Chili's rib recipe is a long time favorite for pork rib connoisseurs. Chili's restaurants are located all over San Antonio. See their website - Chili's
